Ghosts as in the traditional sense then no, there are no ghosts.

However, in the non-traditional sense, then still no, there are no fucking ghosts.

Re: Are there ghosts?
How come whenever anyone reports seeing a ghost they are almost always Victorian/18th/19th century ghosts? Why has no-one ever reportedly seen a caveman ghost or anything like that? Surely there should be stacks of those and ghosts from all other eras knocking around the place. Or loads of 70s or 80s ghosts in flares or shell suits?

I wish ghosts were a thing.

Just imagine Anne Boleyn manifesting to nod one in as win the Europa League.

Because not even ghosts would be seen dead in flares or shell suits.

Absolutely not.

No one has ever seen a ghost dinosaur, have they?

Re: Are there ghosts?
Good point, ES.

No ghosts for 100,000+ years of pre-history, a handful in the first few milennia of history, a football crowd of them in the last 500 years, but only a few in the last 75 years.

The violent death explanation would've led to millions of ghosts from the World Wars.

Re: Are there ghosts?
Ghosts seem in general to be a bit woke. Here's Hamlet's old man.

"I am thy father’s spirit,
Doomed for a certain term to walk the night
And for the day confined to fast in fires,
Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature
Are burnt and purged away. But that I am forbid
To tell the secrets of my prison house,
I could a tale unfold whose lightest word
Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood,"
etc

Re: Are there ghosts?
Was at a family 'do' around 35 years ago and my great aunt Lucy was sitting in her usual chair in my nans house and there was probably about 40 people at this time all downstairs and upstairs filling a 3 bedroom council house in Deptford. She started shouting for everyone to be quiet (she was 103 but appeared and acted like a 70 year old, loved a bacardi and coke). Anyway she was shouting asking everyone to be quiet.. she had not had a drink this night and people had been commenting how well she seeemd. So everyone went quiet and asked her what was up. She said look, look and pointed to living room doorway..she said "it's Vic". Vic was her husband, my great uncle who had died 5 years before. She said "he is saying something but I can't hear him, everyone shut up" so me as a nipper and the whole house had gone quiet and were petrified. Some were sniggering but she had everyone's attention. She then said "Vic I'm.not ready yet, I don't want to come yet. I've still got alot of life In me Vic" she then turned to my grandad, her brother and said "Jim Vic says he has come to take me, said its my time and he has been sent to get me..but I don't want to go yet Jim" she turned to Vic and said at least let me say goodbye. OK she said, I'll say goodbye and then I'll come. Just let me say. goodbye. Jim get me a bacardi" so grandad went and poured her one and we all started talking again and getting on with the party. Bit freaked but it was soon forgotten.

She went up to bed a couple of hours later after she goodbye to everyone at the party. Even us kids which was quite scary cos when she said goodbye to me, she started crying crying saying I don't want to die, I'm not ready and got quite hysterical so I remember my mum pulling her away. She went upstairs helped by my nan ( she always stayed over after a party cos she lived on isle of dogs and was better to go back in morning.

Anyway party carried on as per usual. We all went home etc..forgot all about the incident. Woke up next morning to the phone ringing.. dad took the call. Lucy never woke up. Died in her sleep...........

She was 103 and you're surprised she died?

Re: Are there ghosts?
What I don't get about these ghosts in the popular stories is they're so dramatic and in-your-face, larger-than-life. It's like they're literally rattling away at heavy chains of iron.

Aren't ghosts supposed to be all wispy, drifty and subtle?

Re: Are there ghosts?
No.

However having said that Pentonville’s lovely story shows how though ghosts are not physically real in the mind of someone they can appear to be.

In the daytime I think people who believe in ghosts are idiots.

Walking through a graveyard at three in the morning I'm not so sure.

I love Pentonville's story though. That's what this site is really all about. Cockneys telling their peers family stories.

One day they'll all disappear and only exist here. Keep it up.

Pentonville's story is great - ghosts are real and are made of language and the emotions language triggers.

I fish a lake that is supposed to be haunted by numerous ghosts. American troops were based there in the war and a lot of them died in a big accident. It’s also in the grounds of a ‘haunted ‘ mansion that’s been on loads of ghost programmes and where they do ghost nights at halloween etc. despite having spent more than 100 nights on the bank, often the only person for miles around I’ve never seen or hear as single thing that was untoward. Yet idiots spend one night at the mansion and reckon they see stuff.

I’m very open minded and into all kinds of far out stuff but ghosts = BOLLOCKS

Re: Are there ghosts?
About 15 years ago an ex girlfriend’s dad died. Just out of the blue, was at home, sat down on the sofa and died. This girl she was proper proper close to him and never got to say goodbye. It destroyed her. Anyhow, after she got the news that this had happened, me and her close friends went to her place. She was crying non stop all through the day and into the night. We didn’t want to leave her alone obviously so I said I’d stay with her the first night.

She was on the bed crying and I was next to her, giving her a sort of hug as you do. Finally she fell asleep. The only light in the room was a candle. I got up quietly, blew it out and went back to the bed. I lay awake in the dark for ages, around 2 hours and finally fell asleep too.

Woke up deep in the night because the candle was on and the light woke me up. The girl had not moved, I’m a very light sleeper I wake at a pin drop, and if she’d got up I would have woken too. I know I didn’t get up and relight it. Perhaps the candle could have relit itself after a few hours of no flame, but that doesn’t feel plausible either. Still think about it sometimes.
